Kokou & Umay

Chapter One

Umay cried and begged as she fought against the men who dragged her down the hall to the electroshock room. “It’s not my fault.” She screamed as they pulled her along, tears flowing down her cheeks. She had only smiled at the young man when he had suddenly attacked her, trying to pull her clothes off. No matter how much she had fought, he wouldn’t stop until she had kneed him in the groin. She hadn’t wanted to hurt anyone, but his disposition had gone from polite to aggressive in a matter of moments and in broad daylight. It wasn’t her fault, it wasn’t fair, but they wouldn’t listen to her, she was just a woman. “Please!” They forced her onto the table and quickly buckled her down. She cried as they switched on the machine and as the leather bit was forced between her teeth. The paddles touched her temples and then there was a crash of glass as the window across from her exploded inward. A wind howled through the room, the lights flickering and then he was there standing at the foot of the table.

“Close your eyes.” He said gently, but she felt a mental push, like she had to or…or what? She squeezed them shut and yelped when the screams started. There was suddenly dead silence and the bit was removed from her mouth, her restraints were unbuckled and she felt herself being lifted off the table. “Cover your ears and do not open your eyes until we are outside.” His voice warmed her, calmed her and she told herself she had to trust him. She held tightly to her head, squeezed her eyes shut as hard as she could. She could still hear muffled screams and then there was cool air and she opened her eyes and dropped her hands. She looked up at him and he gave her a small smile. “I am sorry little succubus, but you and the other patients are safe now. I left a message with some of the nurses.”

“S…succubus? Who are you?”

“You truly don’t know, my apologies.” He looked ahead, walking past the crowd that was gathering around the asylum. None of them seemed to see the two of them. “You are safe now, you will come with me until this all dies down. I will protect you.”

“Who are you?”

“You may call me Kokou. Sleep little succubus, you need it.”

“But…I’m not…” She felt her eyelids grow heavy and her body loosening up even though she didn’t want them too. She was tired, she really needed sleep and before she knew it she was resting peacefully in his arms.

He felt sad for her, for the life she must have lead so far not knowing she was a a succubus. That would mean she had no control of her powers and it probably put her in terrible situations. He would teach her about what she was and then he’d make sure she knew how to control the power she held before she left him. He was astounded her parents hadn’t told her, how cruel he thought. Her breed were notoriously selfish since they could easily get anything they wanted but to not tell your child, especially a daughter something so important was not only selfish but absolutely reckless. He hoped she had never been raped thanks to her parents not letting her know or teaching her to control her gifts.

Kokou took her to the safety of his home and laid her down, tucking her in to make sure she stayed warm until she woke. He left her, wanting to make her something good to eat. He was sure she hadn’t been fed a decent meal in quite some time. He thought of her the entire time he cooked. Succubus magic had never effected him and yet she was beautiful. To be that beautiful and one made his mind stay consumed with sadness for her. He hoped now he could lead her into a happier life.

Once her hot meal was prepared he poured her a glass of water then went back to the room he had given her. He didn’t know how she felt right now so he wouldn’t ask her to come down and eat at the table. Sheets could be easily cleaned anyway. He set the plate and glass on the dresser then gently moved Umay to wake her. Despite his efforts to wake her calmly she jumped “Oh…sorry”

“No need to apologize, I know how they were abusing you. It’s why I saved you. I’ve made you some food, it’s the only reason I woke you.”

“Thank you.” She said as she sat up.

He retrieved her food and drink, putting the cup on the table next to her and the plate on her lap. “I hope it’s to your liking.”

“Who are you?”

“Kokou.”

“No, I mean where did you come from, why were you there?”

“I live on the north side of town, at the top of the hill. I was there because I had to send a message. That isn’t the first asylum I have visited.”

“Oh, so you kill doctors?”

“Only those who abuse their patients. What they do may not be considered illegal, but I won’t stand for it.” It’s not like they would remember his face anyway. He had wiped it from their memories.

She took a bite of the food, amazed at how delicious it was. “This is really good.”

“I’m glad.” He gave her a warm smile and for a moment she found herself staring at him, really taking him in for the first time. He was gorgeous. She blushed and quickly looked away. “Are you alright?” He asked as he reached out touched her forehead. “You’re a little warm.”

“I’m fine, thank you.” She took another bite of food.

“I think you should get more rest after this. Your body has a lot of healing to do I’m sure”

“Thank you so much for careing. You could easily ignore things like what they were doing to me but you chose to step in and even take care of me after the fact”

“I was always taught beings that ignore what horrible people are doing are just as bad as the people doing it.” she finished her food then he took her dirty dishes “Please rest”

“I feel so awake now”

“would you like a tour then, so you know better where you are?”

“Yes please.” He helped her to her feet and she found that she actually felt weak and hand to hold tightly to him.

“Would you like me to carry you?”

“No, I’m fine.”

“I imagine you went through a lot before I arrived. Your body needs rest.”

“I really want to see your home, please.”

“Alright, just take it slow then.” He first showed her that her room had its own bathroom then guided her out and down the hall. “There are six bedrooms total, mine is at the end of the hall, closet to the stairs.”

“It’s just you here? No wife or children?”

“Just me and now you. How long were you in the asylum?”

“Three months.”

“Then I hope you will be willing to call this place your home, at least for the time being.” He lifted her carrying her downstairs, not wanting her to fall and lowered her feet back to the floor once they touched bottom. She was blushing and he smiled. “Sorry, I don’t want you getting hurt.” He showed her the living room, the kitchen and its pantry full of food. He took her to the study which doubled as a library and told her she could read anything she liked.

“This place is really amazing.”

“You will be safe here little succubus. Tomorrow I will go out and buy you some clothes.”

“Why do you keep calling me that?” Her thoughts soon drifted to their bizarre meeting, her mind catching up with what she had seen and felt. “And what are you?”

“I’m a three hundred year old vampire and you are a succubus, half one anyway. You have no control over your power because your parents didn’t tell you or help you learn to control it.”

“I don’t know much about my parents, only that I was unwanted as a child”

“I see, maybe whomever was the human was seduced but didn’t really want what happened. Your magic is powerful and sadly a lot of your kind are incredibly selfish, drawing people in their bed that they know good and well wouldn’t enter without their magic. An incredibly strong will can fight it but what a lot of them do I find no better than rape”

“you can help me control it?”

“Yes, you can stay with me until you know how if you’d like”

“I promise I wont use it to be terrible. I mostly want to learn so I can stop…so much makes sense now”

“Your abilities can be good too just so you know, just use what you can do with a good heart alright?’

“I will”

“Let’s get you back to bed, okay?”

“Could I grab a book?”

“Of course.” He took her into the library and helped her around until she found one she thought she would like. He then lifted her and carried her back upstairs and to bed. He propped her up with pillows and then switched on the bedroom lamp for her. “There, but be sure to try and get some sleep. If you think you can’t, then call me and I will help you like I did before.”

“Before?”

“I gave you a push, it’s one of my abilities. It’s like a compulsion you cannot fight.”

“Oh, I see.”

“You don’t have to worry about me doing anything bad, I simply wish to help you and it isn’t harmful.”

“Okay, sorry, I’m just so…you know.”

“You’ve been through a lot, but I will protect you. The people at the asylum don’t even remember you were there, only that they were attacked for their crimes. The police will investigate, but they will not find us.” He gently tucked her hair behind her ear. “If you need me don’t hesitate to call. No matter where I am in the house, I will hear you.”

She blushed again “okay, thank you so much” she truly couldn’t thank this man enough. It was such a blessing and relief to not be at the mercy of those seemingly heartless people who had continuously blamed her every time a man attacked her despite the fact she tried to tell them she wasn’t doing anything. He left her, hoping she’d be able to relax and enjoy her book. He didn’t quite know what to do with himself for now but he knew she’d never get the rest she needed if he hovered. Umay was soon completely wrapped in the book she chose. Her eyes traveled line after line until they became heavy with exhaustion. It was hard to stop reading but Kokou was right about her needing rest so she shut the book, laid down and shut her eyes.

Umay woke the next morning to the smell of food and slowly sat up, yawned and rubbed the sleep from her eyes. Whatever it was smelled delicious and had her stomach growling. She pushed the covers back and swung her legs over the edge of the bed and slowly stood, testing the strength in her legs. She was still standing so she made her way slowly out of the room and down the hall. Umay was just starting up the stairs when she made it to the top of them and his smile made her heart dance. “Well good morning.” He went up to her and offered her his arm which she happily took. “I’m happy to see you up.”

“I still feel a bit weak, but I think getting some real food and rest helped.”

“Good, I just finished breakfast. I want you to eat as much as possible.” He guided her into the kitchen and got her seated then went and poured two glasses of juice.

“Thank you.” She said. She noticed a sword propped against the end of the table and she reached out to touch it, curious about it. She had never seen one outside a museum or the military.

“Please don’t touch.” He said as he picked it up and moved it further away.

“Sorry.”

“Don’t be, it’s enchanted and I would hate for you to get hurt. I’ll show it to you after we eat.”

Chapter Two

She felt foolish for trying to touch a sword she didn’t know anything about, it just looked so amazing and was such a rare sight anymore. The only thing that kept her from being completely embarrassed was the fact he truly didn’t seem upset with her for trying to touch it. “How’re you feeling today?” he changed the subject, not wanting her to dwell on it and feel bad. “Better, that book was really good too”

“I’m glad” he had already known she had a good night, he had stayed up until she fell asleep, wanting to be sure he heard her if she needed him. “How far are you?” he asked and she said “I’d have to look, I didn’t stop on a chapter. I just kept reading until I couldn’t”

“You liked it that much? I’ll try to suggest other books like it”

Umay smiled and Kokou could feel her power flare out for a brief moment and then pull back. He studied her curiously and when she noticed, her fork stopped halfway to her mouth and hovered there. He could tell what she was thinking, that it was happening again. “Is…is something wrong?” She managed to ask.

“You used your power.”

She sat her fork down, looking horrified. “I did? Are you alright? I didn’t mean to.”

“Easy.” He reached over and gently patted her hand, sending warmth tingling up both of their arms. “I’m fine, I’m immune. It’s not your fault, okay?”

“Okay, I just don’t want to hurt anyone.”

“May I ask what you were doing before you were taken away?” He wanted to get her mind off her accidental flare up.

“This and that, I volunteered a lot, though some of the people I worked for insisted on paying me anyway. I also used to visit the theater a lot.”

“I’ll make sure you get to enjoy the theater again. What sort of things do you like to see?”

“My tastes are all over the place to be honest. I like happy endings, it sort of ruins books and movies for me if it ends bad”

“because you have such a big heart, you want to see others happy”

“do you like the theater?”

“Yes but I don’t see anything often. It can be something fun I do with you now. If you are comfortable I’d like to get to know you while I’m helping you, however, you can always tell me if you want me to leave you alone. I will understand and still be happy to help”

‘It’s a relief to meet someone immune to me. I wouldn’t pass up the chance to make a friend with someone who would like me for me”

“You seem like a wonderful woman, succubus or not anybody would be drawn to you”

Umay stayed in a blush as they talked and finished breakfast. He was so kind and straightforward, she had never met anyone like him. After he had cleaned the dishes he took her into the living room and took a moment to show her his sword. It was like a dangerous piece of art and she admired it as he turned it for her and explained how he had made it. “You’re an amazing craftsmen. Do you make other things?”

“I have made jewelry before, but it’s been awhile.

“Maybe you could teach me?”

“If you wish, of course.” He took her hands and examined her fingers. “I may have to get you some protective gloves though, I would hate for you to be cut by a piece of sharp obsidian.”

Her cheeks flushed again and his eyes moved back to her face, making her heart dance. “I…I don’t mind.”

“I promised to protect you, that means from all things.” He smiled sweetly at her, but inside he was shaking himself. What was he saying? She had been attacked and abused and here he was flirting with her. “I need to go shopping for you.” He released her hands. “Is there any color you prefer? Are you into dresses or would you be more comfortable in clothes like mine?”

“I prefer the color dark green and I’d be comfortable in regular clothes or a dress, I’m not picky”

“alright, I wont take long. You should rest while I go. I know you’re feeling better but it’s best you don’t go out just yet”

“I’ll read that book again”

“good, make sure you note what chapter you get to so I know how much I can say, I don’t want to spoil anything” she smiled and he couldn’t help but wear one on his own face. He helped her upstairs and made sure she was comfortable before leaving her. She was healthy and in no safer place so he left her without worrying. He knew he’d return to find her reading or sleeping, completely unharmed. Umay found herself easily swept away again by the story. Each time she passed a chapter she made sure to remember it. She definitely wanted to talk to him about it when Kokou returned.

Kokou kept his ears open as he shopped for her. Word had already spread of the attack on the asylum and he was pleased to hear that further investigations were being done to get to the bottom of the attack. The police would no doubt find out about the abuse and he knew their chief to be a good man. He turned his attention back to clothes, taking care to pick out things that he thought were comfortable. He paid for everything then left, stopping at a bakery on the way to get her something sweet. “Something for your wife?” The woman behind the counter asked. His heart jumped and he just stood there staring for a moment trying to decide what to say.

“For a friend, she’s not feeling well.” He finally said, giving her a smile.

“Oh a friend.” She winked. “Does your friend have a favorite dessert?”

“Something sweet, but not too sweet and she likes the color green.”

The woman picked out a little cake that had a blue and green butterfly on top drawn in icing. “How about this?”

“Perfect, thank you.”

“I hope she likes it” The woman seemed so sure something romantic was going on but then again, he was growing to care for her. She was probably one of those incredibly observant people who read others emotions easily and he was absolutely falling for Umay. She was beautiful and seemed to have an incredibly good heart. He was missing her which he knew was absurd since he hadn’t really been gone that long and he was returning to her soon. That in itself made him see how much he enjoyed her presence. Most of the time it mattered little to him how much he saw anybody but with her, she would be greatly missed the second she left his home. He knew he didn’t have to worry about that any time soon though. It would take her awhile to get used to her abilities and properly control them

Umay was just coming down the stairs when he got back and he chuckled. “You’re always in the right place at the right time it seems.”

“I was getting a snack.”

“Good, I have something for you.” He dropped the clothing bags at the bottom of the stairs and took her hand once she reached him. He took her into the kitchen, gesturing for her to sit as he placed the small box on the table and grabbed a fork for her. “I hope you like it.”

Umay opened the box and couldn’t help but admire the beautiful cake. “It’s almost too pretty to eat.”

“I believe it’s strawberry.”

“Thank you so much, would you share it with me?”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, please.” He retrieved another fork and sat down next to her. She took some on her fork and stuck it in her mouth and he found himself immediately drawn to her lips. “This is really good.” She said and he managed to smile at her. What was wrong with him?

“Excellent.” He took a bite, hoping to distract himself.

“So when are we going to start my training?”

“Tomorrow. I wanted to give you more time to recuperate and to get clothes.”

“And a bath, I must look horrible.”

“You are more than welcome to use the bath but you do not look horrible at all, far from it” there he was, flirting again. The words just seemed to spill from him and he hoped he wasn’t making her uncomfortable. He paid close attention to her reaction, taking her in with all his senses and he found she seemed flattered by it rather than scared or worried. He started to breath again, only realizing now he had been holding his breath with worry over upsetting Umay. They slowly finished her cake then he asked “would you like to see your clothes? Please tell me if you don’t like something, I’d rather know so I can better pick out clothes if I need to again. I have plenty of money so don’t worry about it okay?”

“I’m sure they are all gorgeous” she picked up one of the bags and started digging through it. She truly did like the things he picked out and planned on trying them on after a nice bath. She’d hate to slip into any of this in her current condition. He helped her carry everything back to her room then made sure she was comfortable running the bath before starting to leave her. Umay stopped him to say “thank you so much…I truly can’t thank you enough.”

“You never have to thank me, Umay, I wanted to save you, to protect you.”

“I just feel like I should pay you back somehow.”

He took her hands in his, letting his thumbs brush over her soft skin. There really was something about her, something almost magical that drew him in. “Pay me back by smiling and being happy.”

She blushed, butterflies tickling her insides. “I can do that.”

“That’s all I can ask for.” He released her and stepped out of the bathroom, taking a deep, steadying breath once the door was closed. He barely knew her, but there was something about her, the way she spoke and moved, how kind and beautiful she was, her strength. It was all very alluring and he had to once again reprimand himself.

Heart racing Umay started the water then stripped down to bathe. If it hadn’t been clear earlier it was clear to her now that Kokou was attracted to her. A man had actually fallen for her because of who she was but she didn’t know how to react to it. Men had always been so aggressive about it before, she had feared men desiring her but Kokou was so sweet and kind, actually being charming when he flirted with her. She wanted more of that, she found herself actually wanting more with him than being simple friends but this was all so new to her. She decided to use this time in the bath to figure out how to approach him.

When she was out and dressed in her new clothes, she took a moment to look at herself in the full length mirror. She thought she looked good in the pants and blouse he had chosen. The boots were comfortable and soft, but looked to be made of durable material. She approved and headed downstairs. She didn’t find him in the living room or his study or even the kitchen. Noise coming from out back caught her attention and she pushed the back door open and stepped out into the spacious yard. Her eyes were immediately drawn to him as he moved around the center of it, his sword spinning around him as he practiced with it. He was shirtless, revealing a well muscled torso, and his hair was pulled up on top of his head so she could see every line of his face. He looked so focused and she could almost feel the magic coming off of the dangerous black blade. She wanted to call out to him, but all she could do was stare.

Umay’s scent caught his attention and he came to a stop, his eyes turning to her as he sheathed his blade. “Everything alright?” He called and she seemed almost startled. “Umay?” He could hear her heart beating quickly in her chest and approached her slowly, hoping he hadn’t scared her. “Hey, are you alright?”

“Oh, yes, sorry.” Umay finally said, her face burning with embarrassment. “I just…do I look okay?”

His eyes swept over her and her heart skipped beat. “You look amazing. How do you feel?”

“Much better, thank you. Um…what are you doing out here?”

“Practicing.”

“Won’t people see you?’

“I’m at the very top of the hill, no neighbors.”

“Oh, well…um…you look amazing…I mean…I’ve never seen anyone move around like that.”

He smiled, happy her pause upon seeing him hadn’t been fear, it had been adoration. “It’s taken me many years to be that good. It also takes a lot of practicing”

“if you need to practice more I could sit and watch…though…if you don’t want an audience I can go back in alone”

“I’ll come inside with you” He walked back in with her “Want some tea? Maybe we could discuss where you are in the book now”

“Tea sounds nice and I actually remember the chapter I’m on”

“Good, I’ll only be a moment, just sit please” He walked into the kitchen as she got comfortable on the couch.

She was nervous as she waited, her mind constantly drifting back to how sexy he was and causing her to blush to fever pitch. When he finally came into the living room bearing a tray with a teapot and cups, he gave her a concerned look. “Are you alright?” He asked as he sat the tray on the table and dropped down next to her.

“I’m fine.”

He leaned in, pressing their foreheads together and she realized just how cool his skin was compared to her own. Her heart jumped around in her chest like a living thing and he smiled as he pulled back. “I see, good, you’re not sick.”

“Well, I wouldn’t say that.”

He chuckled as he poured them both a cup and she picked up her cup, the smell of chamomile helping to calm her. “Oh? What kind of sickness are we talking about here? Is it serious? Should we get a doctor?”

She couldn’t help but laugh. It sounded a bit shaky in her nervousness, but he was genuinely funny. “No, I’m fine, really, it’s a bit serious, but it’s not deadly at least I hope it’s not.”

“Good and careful with the tea, it’s hot.”

“You’re really very sweet.”

“It’s hard not to be.”

“Hard not to be?” he smiled in that same, incredibly charming way “with a woman so sweet and beautiful, how could anybody not be kind?” she blushed again and he said “am I being too forward?”

“I…I like your attention to be honest. It’s the first time a man flirting with me has been welcome. You seem so sincere and I know you’d never do anything to hurt me, you saved me” he took her hand, feeling it would be okay and eager to touch her, even in such a small way. “I’m glad to hear it…I’ve been feeling guilty but I find it hard not to flirt”

“and you’re sure you’re immune to me?”

“yes, I’ve met many incubus and succubus and their magic has never worked. Even if it could I know when it’s happening.” she looked relieved again, her heart once again dancing in her chest. She set her mug down then rested her other hand on the one he had holding hers “I…um…I’d like to be with you if you want that”

“Be with me as in stay here forever?”

“would you want that Kokou?” he smiled again “I want that immensely”

“Wow.”

“What?”

“It’s just how everything’s been going. I’m really happy.”

Kokou gently wrapped his arms around her. Her body heated even more and couldn’t help but smile as he leaned in to capture her lips with his. It was like the earth shifted for both of them, a little tingle of excitement moving through them. He pressed their foreheads together, stopping himself before he got lost in how amazing her lips tasted. He didn’t want to ruin things when they had just begun. “I love you.”

“R…really?”

“Oh yes, very much.”

“I…I…”

“Don’t say it until you’re ready.” He said as he pulled back to look into her beautiful grey eyes. “You are under no obligation to tell me until you feel the time is right. I just want you to know the depth of my feelings for you. I love you and I know I’ll grow to love you more with each passing moment.”

She pulled him into another hug as emotion tugged at her heart. He made her feel so special and important and best of all she could finally have a normal, healthy relationship with a man. Dating had never really worked out for her being what she was so this was an amazing change in her life. It was the next day when he started training her to control her abilities. She seemed healthy and comfortable enough and he knew the sooner she knew how to control them the better. In their world you never knew what was going to happen. Tomorrow or the next week. there could be a reason she’d need to use them so he wanted her as ready as possible.

Umay was happy when she was finally able to walk the streets again. She held Kokou’s hand as they strolled through the market and he gave the palm of her hand a reassuring brush with his thumb. It was liberating knowing her power wouldn’t flare up on its own and that she had someone like Kokou to defend her if anything should go wrong. She enjoyed her time out, smiling at the astonished stall and store owners. The last time they had heard anything about her, it was that she had been carted off to the asylum. “I never thought I’d be able to walk so peacefully down the street.” She said. “No one’s hitting on me or anything like that. I feel so…relieved, so free.”

“Well you are, as free as you wish and I will always be here to make sure you stay that way. No one will ever dare try and take you to another one of those torture houses.”

She laughed at how absolutely serious he was. He had a very predatory look in his eyes when he talked about the asylums and especially when he thought of her being in one. She pressed a kiss to his cheek, surprising him and for a moment she swore she saw his cheeks redden. “Thank you for saving me.”

“I had to.” He pulled her gently to a stop next to the large fountain at the market’s center. “I really love you, you know. It’s more than just affection, it’s like a really strong pull. I think I was meant to be there, to rescue you.”

“Like a knight.”

“Like death.” He chuckled. “Maybe a dark knight.” He brought her fingers to his lips, causing her to blush. She could feel people watching them curiously. “May I ask you a question?”

“Of course.”

“Would you consider marrying me someday?”

Her heart stuttered and she felt heat sweep up her neck even as joy danced through her. No one had ever asked her to marry them and not in such an honest and adoring way. She was at a loss for words for a moment, unable to voice how ecstatic the question made her feel. He looked a bit embarrassed and went to open his mouth to retract the statement when she flung her arms around his neck and kissed his lips. It took him a moment to realize what was happening, but once he did he wrapped his arms around her and smiled. “Sorry.” She said as she pulled back, breathless. “Yes.”

“Truly?”

She nodded shyly. “Well, I…I love you.”

He crushed her to him then lifted and spun her around in his excitement. He let her feet touch the ground and he gave her a quick kiss. “We should celebrate. How about the theater? We can see any show you wish then I’ll take you out for dinner.”

He really is easy to love. Umay thought to herself. “Alright, but dinner first.”

“Very well my love.” He offered his arm and she laughed as she took it, every worry she had melting away to be replaced completely by Kokou and his absolute love for her.
